The Man City boss revealed his side will face the final two matches without this crucial player.
Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League by beating Burnley 1-0. It was the distance 2.9 millimetres that gave City a precious lead at Turf Moor. Matt Lowton’s effort to clear Sergio Aguero’s shot at goal wasn’t deemed clear by goal-line technology as Pep’s men leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the table.
These millimetres will decide the title for City at the end of the season. With two games to go, City are still not favourites for the Premier League and they need to win the remaining two games in order to retain the title. After the game, Pep Guardiola reveals this player is set to miss the final two games of the Premier League.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted his side may have suffered a significant blow in their Premier League title fight with Liverpool. City returned to the summit of the table after edging past a resilient Burnley side at Turf Moor on Sunday, winning 1-0 and taking all three points courtesy of Sergio Aguero’s second-half effort.
That means City require just two more wins against Leicester City and Brighton over the course of the next two weeks but Guardiola has revealed his side may be without a key player for the remainder of the campaign Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the clash, Guardiola issued an update on the fitness of Brazilian midfielder
Fernandinho. “Really I don’t know,” he responded when asked when Fernandinho could return.
“I think maybe the last [game of the season] or maybe the [FA Cup] final, maybe. It’ll take a little bit longer.” City are already without influential creative maestro Kevin De Bruyne, who is unlikely to return this season, while in contrast Liverpool have been boosted on the injury front recently with the return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
However, Liverpool’s title rivals do have over a week to recover for their next clash against Leicester, while the Reds are preparing for the first leg of a double-header against Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Fernandinho has been a crucial player for Pep and has been the linking point of attack and defence for City and Guardiola.
The injury to Fernandinho should be hint for Guardiola and City that his replacement is urgent. Manchester City have already listed the likes of Rodri, Saul Niguez and Declan Rice as replacement of the Brazilian and will try to sign one of them in the coming summer.
After the injury to Kevin De Bruyne, an injury to Fernandinho is the last thing Guardiola would have hoped for. Given there’s no player who plays in the same position as the Brazilian, City will have to deploy Ilkay Gundogan in Fernandinho’s position for the remaining two games.
