Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted that his tactics may not work with the current set of players.
Guardiola has been finding it difficult at Man City with some heavy defeats in the past couple of months. It is very much clear that the Spaniard is still undoubtful about his future with the club.
In an interview ahead of City’s clash with Tottenham, Pep explained about his players, tactics and the other details of the team. He said: “They are good players. I have respect for the guys, so why would I say the guys are not good?”
“So I don’t understand the lack of respect for the professionals when they have been amazing players, and (people saying) they are not good enough for me. Maybe I am not good enough for them.”
“They are Manchester City players, top players, they have a lot of quality. They have shown that many times in the past and this season.”
There have been several questions over Pep Guardiola’s team selection in the recent matches. Since the arrival of Claudio Bravo, the goalkeeper hasn’t been performing well at Man City. Asked if this may have been an issue, Guardiola said: “Maybe, maybe. Yes, maybe. Yes, (I take) all the responsibility as a manager.”
“I never in my life – never – say the reason why we lost is because of Claudio Bravo. It’s one of the reasons why, but there are many many other reasons why.”
“Maybe the reason why is because we changed the defence – maybe – but we will never know that.”
In the last couple of days, there have been speculations about Man City forward Sergio Aguero. There were reports that the Argentine may even leave City at the end of the season. Daily Mail reported that Pep Guardiola and Sergio Aguero meet for late-night talks in Manchester restaurant following the arrival of Gabriel Jesus.
But Guardiola has made it clear that Aguero has signed a contract extension with the club. “He has already signed a contract extension, I think,” said Pep.
Guardiola said: “No, we didn’t speak about the contract. He has already a long contract here. He has a lot of money and wanted to invite his coach to have dinner. That is what it is.”
Man City are currently 5th in the Premier League table with 42 points after 21 games. They will play Tottenham at home on Saturday and a defeat will mean a worse situation for Pep Guardiola.
