Player’s agent explains situation with Barcelona

Barcelona’s transfer window has been fairly underwhelming but there might be some conclusive news regarding the situation of one of their stars.

Philippe Coutinho’s time at Barcelona has been far from ideal. The Brazilian forced a move away from Liverpool to join the Catalans after the turn of 2018. But he hasn’t been able to nail a place in the starting eleven due to various reasons. And the situation has become bad enough for the club to consider selling him. Rumours have been making rounds regarding a potential move away from the Camp Nou. As the saga rumbles on, the agent has come out and spoken about his client’s future at Barcelona.

“Not in contact with PSG”

Coutinho’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has rubbished reports linking him with a move to PSG. “I talked a few days ago with Pep Segura [General Manager] at Barcelona,” Coutinho’s representative told RMC Sport.“He told me that the club does not want to sell Coutinho this summer, no matter what. We have not had any contact with PSG.”

Earlier in the window, Coutinho had admitted that his season hadn’t panned out well.“Honestly, it wasn’t a good season. It didn’t produce what I wanted, it didn’t go as I hoped,” he explained.

Author’s Take

The drop off in Countinho’s form this season is totally baffling. The former Liverpool man has only contributed only five goals and two assists in La Liga this season which is one more than Gerrard Pique. He has been unable to establish himself as the first-choice option for Ernesto Valverde on the left-wing or in central midfield.

There is a significant drop off when compared to his last couple of seasons at Liverpool. One of the explanations might be that Coutinho’s presence unbalances the La Liga champions’ attack. With both him and Messi operating centrally, after starting on the flanks initially, the Catalans lack width in possession. This has resulted in Dembele being preferred over Coutinho too make the pitch as big as possible.

Coutinho still remains a hugely talented footballer, one capable of winning games single-handedly. But will it ever happen in the Barcelona stripes is the question plaguing fans and pundits alike.
