Manchester United reclaimed their first spot at the top of the table after registering a 2-1 win against Fulham. Ademola Lookman opened the scoring inside five minutes after the visitors failed to catch him in their offside trap.
Manchester United’s new number seven, Edinson Cavani, brought the score to parity after capitalising on an error from Alphonse Areola. The goalkeeper failed to keep Bruno Fernandes’ cross out. Edinson Cavani showed his poaching instinct and fired the loose ball into the net.
Paul Pogba put another magnificent performance for Manchester United. He took the curled shot from the edge of the box to beat Alphonse Areola and give the much-needed win to the Red Devils.
Cavani has made 12 appearances, which includes only four starts, in Premier League this season. In these 12 games, he has scored 4 goals and assisted twice. He has failed to get regular game time since his arrival due to his fitness issues.
Solskjaer and his management wanted the Uruguayan striker to have enough time in the training so that he can be fit again. Once he got his pace back, FA banned him for three games due to an alleged racism incident on social media.
Being said that, Cavani has been terrific whenever Solskjaer has given him the opportunity to play. The movements made by the 33-year old are second to none. Cavani has been a striker throughout his life and he has proven his quality everywhere.
Paul Pogba appreciates Edinson Cavani:
Manchester United signed Edinson Cavani this summer as a free agent on a one-year contract. His contract also has a clause to extend the contract for a further year.
The Frenchman didn’t shy away from applauding Edinson Cavani after his excellent performance against Fulham. In an interview to MUTV after the game, Pogba stated ‘Everybody knows that Edi is a top-class striker and there are few strikers like this in the world, and we had the chance to have one.’
Manchester United does have quality forwards in the form of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood. All of them have the quality to score terrific goals but have often failed to finish off the scrappy goals. Solskjaer has already mentioned a few times that Rashford needs to score more tap-in goals if he wants to improve his numbers.
Edinson Cavani can be a perfect leader for these young forwards. This is what Pogba points at in his latest interview. “We have talented players – Anthony, Rashy in front, even Mason [Greenwood], that they can shoot from outside and stuff – but they don’t have this, the experience of Edi, and they don’t have the same quality of Edi as well,” said Paul.
Just like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cavani can also help the youngster to grow into better forwards and pass on some of his experience to them. The former PSG striker has featured in many important games throughout his life. Other youngsters can learn from his wealth of experience in playing big games.
Solskjaer will be hoping that the new number seven can score more goals for the team and help this young squad to develop. If he is able to match the expectations laid on him, we might see United triggering his contract extension.
