Predicted Arsenal Line-up To Face Leicester City: Can the Gunners Show Nerves Of Steel Under Pressure?

A catastrophic start to the season for the reigning champions Leicester City and the runners up last time Arsenal as they went down in their respective games in GW1, it was the first in Premier League history that the champions and runners up lost on the opening weekend. Leicester were surprisingly shot down by enervated Hull City who had only 13 fully fit players to contest, on the other hand Arsenal were downed 4-3 by Liverpool thanks to the gunners defensive woes in a contest that rarely allowed eyes to blink.

The two sides clash here at the King power stadium in GW2 which promises to be a mouth watering fixture having produced some sensational couple of matches last time around. Arsenal will be riding high on the fact that they were the only team to do a double on Leicester which lost only 3 matches during their way to becoming the coveted champions of England, albeit the away team is rocked hard due to the personnel available as Wenger is mulling over the fitness of the trio Giroud, Ozil and Koscielney for long now.

Due to the linking of Leicester players with Arsenal there will tension of all sorts between Wenger and Ranieri with the latter sweating it out on subject of contract extension of Riyad Mahrez due to his rumored move to the Emirates, earlier Vardy rejected arsenal citing that his exit would lead an exodus among Leicester players.

Despite the injury crisis Wenger’s reluctance in the transfer window hands him no other option rather than playing gamble with the selection of the trio ahead of the big game which he acknowledged in his press conference – “Of course they have not played any games for a while, so I have to be selective and I cannot go for the three because that would be too risky. But basically, with Laurent Koscielny, I have no choice. If I have to take a gamble on one, it’s certainly on him.”

Koscielney’s presence would mean some stability in the defence and against a Leicester attack of that caliber it is essential that Arsenal should not repeat the mistakes they did in the last game in which Liverpool scored against them at will. With injuries to Aaron Ramsey and Iwobi in last game it will be a critical task for Wenger to get that formation right in the attacking front as well.

Arsenal will be relying again on it’s trusted full back pair of Monreal-Bellerin and have several options in front of the center backs. Santi Cazorla is expected to play a crucial role for the gunners if they are to get the better of Leicester City this time around.

A tactical area going into the game would be Leicester’s problem with crosses and corners on which Giroud can pounce on given he is fit to start or can be introduced at some stage in the game. In 18 games Leicester played after the Christmas period they conceded only 9 goals in which 5 of them were headed goals.

Stats :-

  • Leicester are on a 19-game winless run against Arsenal in the Premier League (D6 L13) and lost both games last season.
  • Arsenal have scored four Premier League hat-tricks against Leicester (Dennis Bergkamp, Nicolas Anelka, Thierry Henry and Alexis Sanchez), the joint-most against one opponent in Premier League history (Manchester United vs Newcastle also on four).
Arsenal haven’t lost their opening two league games since the inaugural Premier League season in 1992/93.
  • Arsenal have never lost an away Premier League game at the King Power Stadium, drawing two and winning 5-2 there last season.
  • Simon Royce is the only Leicester goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet against the Gunners in the Premier League, doing so in a goalless draw in January 2001.
