UCL Clash: Manchester City vs Dortmund

Manchester City

With the Premier League getting postponed due to the sad demise of the U majesty queen in the UK. Manchester City players must have got a complete week off and should start their strongest eleven against Dortmund.

Defence

In goal, we will have Brazilian Ederson starting. Coming into defence here might see some surprises from Pep Guardiola. Kyle Walker is set to return in that right-back role after he missed the UCL opening game due to a knock. Since Walker will be returning Joao Cancelo will go back to being left back for Manchester City. In the heart of the defence, Pep opted to retain the duo of Ruben Dias and Akanji who would also play against his former team after his sensational deadline day transfer from Dortmund to Manchester.

Midfield

In midfield, we might see Manchester City’s new signing Kalvin Phillips getting his first official start for the club after he successfully recovered from his injury last week and was also given a few minutes. Alongside Phillips we see Rodri getting the nod. Now for that third midfielder role, it will be none other than Kevin De Bruyne.

Attack

Here one player is definitely going to start, that is Erling Haaland who has been in the form of his life. Alongside Haaland on either wing, we might see Riyad Mahrez deployed in that right-wing to exploit Dortmund on the counter with his pace and dribbling. Lastly, for that left-wing role, Manchester City has got 2 excellent players Phil Foden and Jack Grealish. With form behind Phil Foden, Pep might just opt for an in-form player and Phil Foden might get the nod ahead of Grealish.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund before their weekend game against Rb Leipzig were flying high and were giving good performances. This last weekend they suffered a demoralizing defeat to the struggling Rb Leipzig team. Dortmund was completely outplayed in that game and they suffered a 3-0 loss to Leipzig. Coming from that loss straight into the UCL that too against Manchester City they must be low on confidence but they need to pick themselves up and turn up for this big game.

Defence

Despite conceding three goals lately against Leipzig, Alexander Meyer will continue to play goal for Dortmund. Since their first choice Keeper, Kobel is out injured.   In order to contain the Man City attackers on Wednesday night,  Sule and Nico Schlotterbeck will continue their defensive combination at the centre of Dortmund’s defence.

Raphael Guerreiro continues to start at left-back after his promising displays till now in their campaign.  Thomas Meunier will maintain his spot at right-back. Both of them will need to maintain solid defensive positioning at the full-back position to prevent Man City from generating an excessive number of chances on the wings.

Midfield

In midfield coach Edin Terzic might bring back Emre Can as he is returning from his injury to provide that experience in the CDM role along with young and talented prospect Jude Bellingham. Emre Can’s inclusion will also mean Dortmund has an extra defensive cover defence as they are playing against one of the best-attacking teams of UCL, Manchester City. For that third and final midfield spot Dortmund captain Marco Reus will start.

Attack

Coming to attack here Dortmund is struggling with an ample amount of injuries. Likes of Thorgan Hazard Donyell Malen and their two-star summer signings Karim Adeyemi and Sebastian Haller will be missing out. In absence of Haller and Adeyemi, Anthony Modeste will assume the centre-forward role along with Brandt and Reyna operating on either wing for Dortmund. The front 3 of Brandt- Modeste and Reyna will have the daunting task of getting past a solid Manchester City defence on a big UCL night that too in an away game in Etihad stadium.
