Premier League clubs combine to give Liverpool best Christmas present.

Jurgen Klopp’s club are four points clear at the top of the Premier League for Christmas, with Chelsea and Manchester city suffering defeats at home on Saturday.

The Reds did their part on Friday, with a 2-0 win over Wolves at Molineux ensuring their place in pole position for Christmas Day.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk downed the spirited hosts, and put pressure on City to get a result at the Etihad the following day.

This left Liverpool supporters hoping for a boost from ex-manager Roy Hodgson, with few hopeful of the Eagles taking three points against a Manchester City side which had lost just once in the league.

But fortunately for the league leaders, Pep Guardiola’s side slipped up again, with Crystal Palace sealing the victory with a three-goal burst after Ilkay Gundogan’s opener.

Jeffrey Schlupp equalized on 33 minutes, before Andros Townsend’s sensational strike put the visitors ahead, with Luka Milivojevic’s second-half penalty ultimately proving the winner.

Kevin De Bruyne struck late as City pushed for a hopeful draw, but Palace were able to hold on for a vital win for themselves and for Liverpool.

The blues also suffered defeat on Saturday, falling to a 1-0 loss at home to Leicester City as Jamie Vardy scored the only goal at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham plays Everton in a 44 pm kickoff on Sunday, with a win for Liverpool’s city rivals ensuring an even more comfortable position for the festive period.

But regardless of the results at Goodison, Jurgen Klopp and his squad can enjoy Christmas safe in the knowledge they now have a strong lead over their competition.

The Reds are next in action at home to Newcastle on Boxing Day, with City travelling to Leicester, whose victory over Chelsea was their first in five games.

Author’s take:

Liverpool are now the number one team on the EPL table with a point difference away from Man City seated at the second spot.

However, it would not take much time for Man City to return to the top.
