Chelsea move ahead in the race to sign Tiemoue Bakayoko

RMC sport report that Chelsea have made a bid of £39 million to sign Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco. The recently crowned Ligue 1 champions are bracing for bids for most of the members of their current starting eleven. Along with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United also registered interest in the 22-year-old midfielder. This report comes after the tweet by reputed football journalist Guillem Balague that Bakayoko had agreed personal terms with the English Champions.

Bakayoko acts as a shield for the back four making interceptions aplenty. He has made a total of 56 interceptions in the league this season and has a healthy passing accuracy of 87%. He also has a successful tackle percentage of 81. Despite the plaudits he has garnered for himself, he does have a few shortcomings. The Frenchman is prone to lapses in concentration. He was indirectly responsible for Juventus’ both goals against Monaco in the second leg of Champions League semi-final. Former player, Rio Ferdinand had advised the English clubs to not splash huge amounts of money on the youngster just yet.

Bakayoko definitely has potential to be one of the best defensive-midfielders in the world but he does need time to learn and perfect the art. He is definitely worth the money but looking at his performances in the big games, going over £40 million might be a little too high right now. That is not say that he might not improve in a year or two and be worth more.

Currently, four clubs are in for the Monaco man. Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are looking to sign the midfielder. Jose Mourinho is looking for a defensive midfielder and wants to bring Bakayoko to Old Trafford. He is planning to pair him up with his international teammate Paul Pogba. Antonio Conte, on the other hand, is looking for a backup to N’Golo Kante. Bakayoko would be a valuable addition to any team’s midfield. He would bring a certain amount of steel and strength in the Liverpool midfield to back up the Reds’ attacking flair.

United have shown strong interest but their priority is signing a top center half and to rejuvenate their back line. As things stand Chelsea is definitely his most likely destination if he does leave the Principality this summer.
