The Reds will face competition from Chelsea in order to sign Olympique Lyon captain Nabil Fekir in this summer transfer window.
Liverpool fans will be buzzing at the prospect of next season. The Merseyside club has already secured deals for Fabinho from AS Monaco and Naby Keita from Red Bull Leipzig but the summer window is still far from closed. The latest news coming in from Liverpool is that they are preparing a deal for Lyon captain Nabil Fekir to replace Philippe Coutinho who left for Barcelona in the January transfer window.
However, according to the Daily Star, Chelsea are preparing to steal Fekir from under Liverpool’s nose. The Frenchman has been the talismanic captain for Lyon and helped them to a third-place finish in the Ligue 1.
With Chelsea finishing outside the top 4, star winger Eden Hazard could finally leave Stamford Bridge to join Real Madrid which would leave a massive void at the club. And the West London club sees Fekir as an ideal replacement for the Belgian playmaker.
Liverpool will be looking to use some of the £142 million they received from Barcelona for the sale of Coutinho in order to lure Fekir to Anfield. However, the Reds spent £70 million on Virgil Van Dijk and another £44 million for Fabinho ever since. Fekir will be valued at around £60 million by Lyon and although they may be reluctant to sell him, a massive offer may too difficult to turn down.
Chelsea may not hold the edge over Liverpool in terms of a set up for next campaign with the lack of Champions League football, but the sale of Hazard would certainly generate enough transfer fees for owner Roman Abramovich to look into the transfer market for re-enforcements and the 24-year-old Fekir is definitely one of the key men on the English clubs’ wish list.
I would favor Fekir to move to Liverpool because he could be that missing ingredient that Klopp needs to win titles at Anfield. Fekir is a top quality player who can be a match winner at any time for the Reds if they manage to secure a deal for him this summer.
