Henry in way of Gunner’s target?
Arsenal are apparently duking it out with club legend Thierry Henry for the signature of Atletico Madrid’s Gelson Martins, as per O Jogo. Martins was also linked heavily with a move to the Emirates Stadium last summer but chose to move to the Spanish capital from Sporting Lisbon. But things have not gone to plan for the 23-year-old, having started only one La Liga game this season, apart from seven appearances off the bench.
The report claims that Arsenal still retain an interest in the winger, but they will face a stern battle for his services with Monaco manager and Gunners legend Henry, who is also reportedly keen to sign the player. With Atletico needing to come up with funds to sanction the purchase of struggling Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata, the club have put up Martins and Nikola Kalinic for sale. It will be interesting to see where this rumour goes from here, but it looks like Unai Emery will have to hope for some help from their bitter city rivals if they want to have a chance of snapping up the Portugese midfielder.
