The Premier League has had a handful of talented players at various clubs. The big six have always been home to top-class talents at least once in their careers. But in all the top players, the wingers have had a special role on the pitch.
Though traditionally playing along with the wings and making crosses into the box were their main duties. In recent years the role has changed a lot and a winger is equally important as a striker. We now see modern wingers net a minimum of 10-15 goals a season. The goal tally of a winger is equally important to his creativity in the current football world. Hence, here we are going to list Premier League wingers from the most overrated to the best.
An overrated tag can easily be gained by a player. A player who has had a great career away from the English top-flight and losing it all at the PL is normal. Two such players that were not up to their mark were Nani and Steve McManaman. The duo has had a huge hype at their respective clubs. And have also netted goals in some crucial moments. But they were unable to bring the same spark as the player who places above them.
Their inconsistency is the major reason for tagging them as overrated. Nani has appeared in a total of 230 games for Manchester United
Some stars who were a big shot at other big European leagues were unable to play at the same level at the Premier League. Arjen Robben is one such player who was unable to shine for Chelsea as he did with Bayern Munich. Robben has always been a top player in terms of talent, but his time at Chelsea was not a great one. Marc Overmars and John Barnes were also rather average for Arsenal and Liverpool.
Raheem Sterling is another player who has been good but not great. The Manchester City ace is a key member of Pep Guardiola’s lineup. Sterling has also found the net many times for the Sky Blues, but he still has a lot more to go before he reaches the next level. His counterparts, like Sadio Mane, are way better when compared to him.
David Beckham, Gareth Bale, Ryan Giggs, David Ginola, Alexis Sanchez, and Freddie Ljungberg have been top quality wingers in the English PL. Beckham and Giggs were the best wingers at United in their time. And they are still idols to the young talents at Old Trafford. Gareth Bale was a pure sensation at Tottenham Hotspur as a youngster. He was able to impress LaLiga giants Real Madrid with his class. Bale is now back at Spurs and we may see him in the form again.
Sanchez was in his prime during his time at Arsenal, scoring goal after goal for the Gunners. He was a truly remarkable winger, scoring and assisting equally. Sanchez was able to secure 80 goals in his name during his time at Arsenal. David Ginola and Freddie Ljungberg at the top of their game for United and Arsenal.
It’s always hard to list the best talents in football. Yet we feel that Sadio Mane, Mohammed Salah, Eden Hazard, and Robert Pires are some of the most world-class talents to play in the Premier League. Sadio Mane and Mo Salah have been working as a unit with Roberto Forminho to win big for Liverpool. Mane and Salah have played in their top games for the Reds, winning them the UCL and Premier League titles back-to-back.
Eden Hazard was also a world-class player for Chelsea, winning several titles with the Blues. The Belgian winger scored a total of 85 goals in his career there. He has also won several trophies with Chelsea and won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2014-15. Robert Pires was also a top-class player and was unique in his dribbling skills. Pires was more like a traditional winger and would dribble past opponents to find the net or make a key pass.
Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly the best winger to play in the Premier League. Sir Alex Ferguson blessed the whole world by recruiting the young Portuguese star to Manchester United. Ronaldo is tipped as the second greatest player in the history of the Premier League, only behind the legendary Thierry Henry. The Portuguese ace did wonders in Manchester and went on to become the GOAT of football.
Ronaldo netted a total of 118 goals and assisted another 68 in all forms of football for Manchester United. He went on to win the Ballon d’Or in 2008 and has since been the last man to win it playing for a Premier League side. Cristiano made his success so great that he made his name a brand of football.
To list out players from the worst to the best is always hard. Many may agree with this listing but surely others might disagree completely. However, all of the top players listed above have been able to make the football world better, maybe even a little. And as football enthusiasts, we appreciate them all for their love for the game.
