Icardi and his wife are controversial figures in Italy, and he was the main star of Inter Milan before Lukaku’s arrival.
Like his fellow countryman, Messi, Icardi was a Barcelona Youth product. He later joined Sampdoria on a loan deal. Later, Sampdoria decided to buy him for €400,000 in July 2011.
Icardi appeared in 33 matches and scored 11 goals for the Italian club. During his time at Sampdoria, he had some controversy with Maxi Lopez.
PSG Transfer News: Icardi at Inter Milan
In 2013, Inter Milan decided to buy 50% registration rights of Mauro for just €6.5 million. This kind of ownership was called co-ownership, which was a very popular transfer policy in Italian football. It also helped many Serie A clubs to survive financially back then.
Icardi made his official debut as a substitute against Genoa with a 2-0 win. Icardi bloomed at Inter Milan, as He scored staggering 111 goals in 188 games. He was the top goal scorer of the 2014-15 and 2017-18 seasons.
But he was never on good terms with the management. He had a bad relationship with Mancini and also criticised his teammates.
The feud did not go too long, as he became captain of Inter at the beginning of the 2015-16 season. But in 2019, his wife and agent, Wanda Nara, criticised Inter’s management and its players on the TV program. The club hierarchy punished the player by taking back his captaincy.
After the arrival of Lukaku in the summer of 2019, Inter Milan board decided to sell Icardi, as new manager Conte was not convinced by the player’s attitude.
PSG came to sign Argentina International on a season-long loan deal with a €70 million option to buy. Mauro displayed his excellent form by becoming the team’s leading goalscorer in the Champions League with 5 goals in 7 games beside Mbappe.
But Manager Tuchel kept him as an unused substitute. On 31 May, Paris Saint-Germain decided to keep him by spending a reported amount of €60 million, and €8 million per year as salary.
He worked well under both Tuchel and Pochetino. Due to injuries, his form suffered a lot, as he scored only five goals across all competitions in the last season.
PSG Transfer News: Out of Favour at PSG and Link With Other Clubs
The newly appointed manager of PSG, Christophe Galtier confirmed Icardi’s link to other clubs back in August, as he said “The club is working closely with Mauro to find the best possible solution.” He also discussed Icardi’s lack of form and added: “it is important for him to get back on track”. It was clear that the Argentine striker was not in his plans.
On 6th September football transfer expert, Fabrizio Ramano confirmed that Icardi was on the verge of joining The Yellow-Reds of the Turkish Super League.
Galatasaray manager, Okan Buruk also confirmed two possible in-comings, as he spoke: “We want to complete Mauro Icardi and Kaan Ayhan deals as soon as we can.”
Rumours say that it will be a loan move, and his €8 million per year salary will be divided by two clubs. PSG will pay €5 million of the salary whereas the Turkish giant will give the remaining €3 million with a €1 million extra bonus based on the performances.
