Barcelona are one of the top contenders to win the prestigious UEFA Champions League trophy at the end of 2018/19. Here’s a look at their realistic chances of winning it.
Barcelona and Lionel Messi are one of the top favourites to win the UEFA Champions League after a strong start to the competition this year. The Catalans are on top of their group after successfully dispatching PSV Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan in their opening three matches. As a result, their qualification into the knockout phase is just one win away.
The Catalans are hoping to win the European Cup for the first time since 2015. They have faced elimination from the quarter finals for three successive years at the hands of Atletico Madrid, Juventus and AS Roma. In addition to that, Barcelona’s players and fans have also gone through the agony of watching arch rivals Real Madrid lift the trophy for three years in a row.
If there is one trophy that is in massive demand amongst the Catalans, it is the UEFA Champions League, and so far, the quest for it has started off pretty successfully. The Spanish giants have now been backed by Juventus legend and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to win the UEFA Champions League in May later this season.
‘Champions League favourites? You have to say Barcelona because they have the best player in the world,’ Buffon said. ‘Then Juventus who signed the other player (Cristiano Ronaldo) who is considered the best.”
Gianluigi Buffon surely knows the importance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, as both of them have derailed his bid to win the UEFA Champions League- the only trophy missing from the Italian keeper’s magnificent haul. And as he rightly pointed out, any team with one of those two players has the highest possible chance of winning Europe’s biggest prize.
