Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig registered an emphatic 3-2 win over defending champions Real Madrid in their latest match.
Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner scored the goals for the home team. Meanwhile Vinicius Junior and Rodrigo were on the scoresheet for Real Madrid.
Coming into the match, Real Madrid were already through to the next stage of the continental competition. But they still needed one point to clinch the group. Meanwhile, they were facing an RB Leipzig side who were desperate for a win.
Carlo Ancelotti started with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Thibaut Courtois started under the goal. Lucas Vazquez, Eder Militao, Nacho Fernandez and Antonio Rudiger completed the back four. Aurelien Tchouameni and Toni Kross played in the base of the midfield. Eduardo Camavinga was given a free no.10 role. Marco Asensio and Vinicius Junior started on the wings while Rodrygo led the lines.
Leipzig’s Start Took Real Madrid by Shock
The German side had a great start to the game. From the kick-off, they showed urgency and were pressuring the Madrid defense. Leipzig got their reward through Josko Gvardiol. Madrid custodian Thibaut Courtois pulled up a brilliant save from Andre Silva’s header but the rebound fell to Gvardiol who made no mistake to give Leipzig the lead.
Leipzig then soon doubled their lead. Left-back David Raum’s deflected pass into the box found Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchmen easily scored past Courtois to make the score 2-0.
After conceding two early goals, Real Madrid were shocked. Meanwhile, Leipzig continued their great pressure on the Los Blancos. At first, Amadou Haidara’s decent strike was well saved by Courtois. Then Christopher Nkunku failed to hit the target even after beating an onrushing Real Madrid goalkeeper.
Finally, Los Blancos came into the game when Brazilian winger Vinicius pulled one back for the visiting side just ahead of halftime. It gave Real Madrid momentum in the second half. But Leipzig showed their resilience and kept a good defensive shape.
They were mainly relying on counter-attacks. And finally, from one such move, Leipzig restored their two-goal lead. German forward Timo Werner calmly finished past Courtois from a short range.
After conceding the third goal, Madrid threw everything at the German team. they got a final chance when Rodrygo was fouled in the box. The Brazilian forward reduced the deficit from the spot.
But this was not enough for Real Madrid to clinch anything from this match as it ended in a 3-2 loss. This was Real Madrid’s first loss of the season in any competition. Despite the defeat, they will stay at the top of the table, having already qualified with ten points.
Meanwhile, Leipzig are now in second place with eight points from five matches. In the final match of the group stage, they will now require a draw to progress to the round of 16.
