Real Madrid extend contract with ‘unhappy’ player

The player was expected to leave the club after falling down the pecking order.

Real Madrid may be close to signing Diaz from Real Madrid but there will be players leaving the Santiago Bernabeu in January. The likes of Isco and Modric are rumoured to be leaving the capital. It seems the Los Blancos have extended this getaway player’s contract.

Real Madrid and Keylor Navas have reached an agreement to extend the goalkeeper’s contract with the club, according to reports from Jugones and MARCA. Navas’ new deal would expire in 2021 and his salary will increase in €1 million, per those same reports. Keylor Navas is not Real Madrid’s starting goalkeeper anymore. Many thought that he could be on his way out of the club.

The Costa Rican goalkeeper, despite helping his side win a La Liga title and three Champions Leagues in the last three seasons, found himself replaced in the summer as the European Champions swooped in to sign Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea. The 32-year-old is said to be considering his options. Arsenal and Roma are said to be interested in him.

However, the Los Blancos seem to be satisfied with Navas’ attitude while being a reserve. As a result, they have decided to give him a new deal. It’s worth mentioning that Navas’ previous contract was set to expire in the summer of 2020. It’s something which could significantly hurt his value had Madrid decided to part ways with him next June.

Now, Madrid and Navas could possibly decide to explore the market next summer. And if the Costa Rican goalkeeper ends up wanting to leave the club to become a starter again, Madrid will get a good deal. He wants to continue with his life after retirement in Spain. So a change of team now doesn’t fit into his plans. At the beginning of February, he will be a father again, which slows down his desire to leave the city of Madrid.

Author’s Take:

It seems Navas has come to terms that at the age of 32, he won’t get first team regular action. Also, no team would be willing to give the salary that he is earning at Madrid. It seems the Costa Rican is happy being on the bench.
