Barcelona has reportedly stepped out of the race for the PSG superstar and has let Real Madrid lead the charge for his signature, despite him being their top target.
Real Madrid is looking to make next summer’s transfer window, the summer of change wherein they will revamp their squad and bring in new, highly talented players to boost their chances of winning yet another La Liga title. The club has struggled this season and sit third in the La Liga table, 13 points behind league leaders Barcelona and 4 points behind second-placed Atletico Madrid.
That’s why they have created a shortlist and it includes the likes of Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Ali, Manchester United’s David De Gea and Paul Pogba, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and David Alba and finally PSG’s Neymar, Marquinhos, and Marco Veratti. But with Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea among others after the same transfer targets, Real Madrid are going to have a tough time rebuilding their squad.
However, the Los Blancos have received a massive boost, as Barcelona have stepped off the chase for PSG superstar Marco Veratti, according to reports from Diario Gol and the Daily Star. The Catalan giants have been chasing Verratti for quite some time now and it’s no surprise why. The diminutive Italian midfielder is one of the best in the world at his position and has slowly flourished at PSG ever since his move from Pescara in 2012.
Not just a superb passer of the ball, the 25-year-old has specialized in dictating play from deep and has also been called one of the most intelligent players around. With a pass-accuracy of over 90 percent this season alone, Marco Verratti has managed to fly under the radar thanks to the performances of Edison Cavani, Neymar, and youngster Kylian Mbappe.
For Real Madrid, this means that they can bring in their Luka Modric replacement or upgrade, however you want to look at it. The Croatian international is already 32 years old and while he is a mainstay in Zinedine Zidane’s line-up, Modric isn’t getting any younger. Verratti would be a clear step up and with his resilience and tenacity, the Italian is also a defensive powerhouse.
Marco Verratti would be perfect for both Barcelona and Real Madrid, but for Real Madrid, the 25-year-old would do very well. He will be replacing an aging Luka Modric and thus would fit right into the first team from the get-go onwards, but with Barcelona very interested in him, it’s a surprise to see them step down just like that.
