The defending La Liga champions doubled their advantage exactly 18 minutes later through Fede Valverde. The Uruguayan scored from a rebound after Vinicius Jr’s attempt at goal had hit the post.
With the win over their fierce city rivals, Real Madrid maintained their perfect start to the 22/23 season.
Real Madrid news: Simeone aims dig at Los Blancos
Speaking after the match, Atletico Madrid manager Simeone aimed a dig at Real Madrid for their style of play.
Simeone said that Real Madrid reminds him of the Atletico Madrid squad they once had with Diego Costa spearheading the attack. He suggested Real Madrid rely on the counterattack, just like the Atletico Madrid team that was once criticized.
“To see a team that defends low and goes on the counter-attack like that, it reminds me of the team we had with Costa when they criticised us back then,” Simeone said after the derby defeat to Real Madrid.
He also hailed Real Madrid’s ability to make the most of the chances they get and praised Carlo Ancelotti for the job he has done at the club.
He added: “They have a very good direct game, a quick transition from defense to attack, forcefulness, orderly defense, they play well, take advantage of their chances. It is a great job by the Madrid coach. They counter-attack with significant speed and have obvious talent.”
Meanwhile, the win over Atletico Madrid sees Real Madrid reclaim the first place in the league table which was briefly occupied by Barcelona.
Real Madrid have played six matches in the Spanish top-flight so far this season and have secured victories in all. They have 18 points from their first six fixtures. Barcelona, meanwhile, sits second in the league table with 16 points from six matches.
Real Madrid will resume their La Liga title defense after the September international break. They host Osasuna at Santiago Bernabeu in their next match.
