Real Madrid won 2-0 against AS Roma on Tuesday evening to seal their passage into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as group leaders. The midfielders did a spectacular job in a match that was decided thanks to the exploits of the players stationed in the centre of the park.
Marcos Llorente’s disciplined and professional performance on his maiden European start of the season helped Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in playing advanced roles without having to think too much about the defending. The 23 year old’s performance has drawn in a lot of praise, with his teammate Lucas Vazquez one of the people amazed by his display.

“Llorente has played a spectacular match,” Vazquez said after scoring his first goal of the season.  “It was not easy for this match, he had a lot of personality and a lot of enthusiasm. We have to be very happy with him. The matches are getting more difficult, this was very close and could have been won by anyone. The [first] goal gave us confidence.”
“The important thing was to recover sensations after a very bad game in Eibar,” Vazquez added. “I think we have competed very well, we have played as a team both attacking and defending. I’m very happy with the goal, I really wanted to score to dedicate it to my son.”

Santiago Solari’s call of starting Marcos Llorente against physical and attacking opponents like AS Roma was certainly a huge call and that paid off. The manager has been justifying of late that he prefers players based on form rather than their names with Isco’s exclusion from the squad being another great decision.
Lucas Vazquez has been extremely important and performed well on Tuesday. But the plaudits must belong to Marcos Llorente after such a responsible display. Toni Kroos has usually been preferred in Casemiro’s absence but if the 23-year-old can perform the way he did in Rome, he might get a lot of chances.
