Real Madrid’s manager Santiago Solari made a few harsh yet brave calls when making the team sheet ahead of his side’s victory over AS Roma on Wednesday that helped them seal top spot in group G.
Real Madrid saw off AS Roma 3-0 on Tuesday evening courtesy of goals from Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez. The Whites’ win means that they will finish group G as the toppers having already advanced into the next stage before the match itself as CSKA Moscow were defeated by Viktoria Plzen earlier in the evening.
One of Santiago Solari’s eye catching decisions was of dropping Isco from the substitutes as well whereas he went with Marcos Llorente at defensive midfield with Casemiro absent. The 42-year-old has explained why the playmaker was dropped by him and has stated that it was a sporting decision.
“Dropping Isco was a specific decision for a specific moment,” Solari said. “Coaches are in place to make decisions and that’s it, I am here to make decisions. Sometimes we make the right ones, sometimes we don’t but it’s easy to say that after the game. Decisions are almost always sporting, except in exceptional cases, although there are none of those here. Starters and substitutes are fictitious problems that don’t exist. The players are here to give everything and be at 100 percent so they can be picked. The players showed they can take responsibility and we’re really happy to get the win. We had to work hard and suffer, but sometimes that’s just what you need to do and we won playing like that.”
“Playing Llorente was a decision I made,” Solari added. “I’m very happy with how he played. He’s very disciplined and he works very well. He’s a young man now and not a kid anymore. We’re all very happy for him.”
Author’s Take
Isco is the man responsible for his own exclusion from the starting eleven and there needs no blaming in favour of Solari for that decision of his. Real Madrid’s new style requires a direct and more fluid approach and Isco is known to slow counter attacks which will lead to a collapse in the Whites’ system.
The former Malaga midfielder’s decision making has to improve otherwise he faces an uncertain future.
