Manchester United are interested in making a bid for Napoli star defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports.
The 27-year old Napoli defender, Kalidou Koulibaly has been putting in some monster displays for the Italians and Manchester United have certainly noticed. Koulibaly was always said to be Jose Mourinho’s No.1 target for United but the Serie A side were looking for around £90million for the leading defender in the football.
But now that interest seems to have carried over to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and more importantly the man holds the purse strings, Ed Woodward.
At 27, with great pedigree in European football, Koulibaly should be just the man United need to shore up their backline. And the bookies agree. They say Koulibaly looks set for a shock move to Man United when the transfer window opens in January.
The bookies rate the Napoli defender’s odds of making Old Trafford his next port of call at just a 2/1 shot, shorter than they have ever been.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said, “Solskjaer may well be trusted with a hefty transfer budget next month. The odds suggest Koulibaly will be the first player who will move to Manchester United.”
The Senegalese star is one of a number of names on United’s wishlist as they finally look to solve their defensive problems. Koulibaly was linked with Chelsea a couple of years ago but remained at Napoli which he joined in 2014. He is one of the leading defenders in the world of football. Toby Alderwerield and Eder Militao at Porto are other names in the frame.
United have been short at the back for most of the season. Eric Bailly has been struggling with injuries this term while Chris Smalling has been requiring injections to play due to a fracture in his foot. Marcos Rojo has returned to action in recent weeks but has never really convinced the United faithful.
Author’s take:
United have been growing their interest in the Senegalese Star. For most of the season, United have been short at the back with the defenders either injured or unable to play. By signing Koulibaly, the Old Trafford side looks to solve their defensive problems.
