Despite winning the La Liga last season, Barcelona still have some shortcomings in their side and the Spanish club could turn to Manchester United to solve at least one of them.
Matteo Darmian joined English Premier League giants Manchester United from Italian side Torino for €18 million in 2018. However, the player hasn’t been able to do enough to claim a consistent position in the Red Devils’ first eleven.
Although the 28-year-old was linked with moves away from the Manchester club on several occasions, no deal materialized. It is noteworthy that the full-back’s contract with Manchester United runs out in the summer of 2019 and if the two parties do not agree on a new contract, the player could leave the club for free next year.
Now, a report from Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona are interested in Darmian. After the sale of Lucas Digne to Everton, the Blaugrana have been suffering a slight shortage of personnel, especially at the back.
Jordi Alba is the La Liga side’s first choice left back, but an injury to him would put the club in trouble as they will have to turn to Thomas Vermaelen or Clement Lenglet, both of whom are centre-backs.
For the same reason, Barcelona are said to be on the hunt for a backup fullback, who could give cover to their first team counterparts. With that in mind, Darmian is the one who Barcelona has identified as the ideal candidate according to reports from Spain.
This transfer rumour is coming on the back of Barcelona being heavily linked Manchester United star midfielder Paul Pogba recently.
Darmian is a clearly a player who is no longer in Manchester United’s plans. Either he will leave for cheap in January or for free next summer. However, it will be a really surprising move if Barcelona comes calling for him.
