He played for the Netherlands against defending FIFA World Cup champions France and contained dangerous Kylian Mbappe from wreaking havoc.
Despite another Netherlands defender, Virgil Van Djik, claiming Matthjis de Ligt is on Liverpool’s and Jurgen Klopp’s radar, Spanish giants and defending La Liga champions FC Barcelona are close to signing 19-year-old Ajax centre-back de Ligt. A host of clubs including Liverpool and Manchester United have shown interest in signing de Ligt, but latest reports suggest that he will move to FC Barcelona.
This comes as a happy news for FC Barcelona fans as they are set to lose the battle to sign another young Ajax prospect Frenkie de Jong to Manchester City. Meanwhile, FC Barcelona consider de Ligt as a long-term replacement for their reliable, but ageing, central defender Gerard Pique, who will soon turn 32. The Catalans are reportedly planning to secure the services of this highly-rated young defender for a world record fee for a teenager.
This season, he has so far played 14 games for Ajax and has scored two goals. Meanwhile, he has played 7 times for the Netherlands in 2018. There is no a doubt that this young defender has what it takes to become one of the best defenders in the near future and a move it a club like FC Barcelona, if that ensures his progress, will only do good for de Ligt.
Apart from Liverpool, another English outfit, Manchester United had also monitored him as Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign new defenders to bolster their fragile defence. However, it is unlikely that the player will join Manchester United, with FC Barcelona emerging as heavy favourites.
It remains to be seen what will happen. Reports suggest Barcelona have lost the race to Manchester City in their pursuit to sign Frenkie de Jong. So, the Catalan outfit will be eager to do whatever it takes to sign de Ligt, a player whom they have been monitoring for a while. Will de Ligt join FC Barcelona in the summer transfer window? or will Liverpool add another Dutch defender to their armoury? Time will tell.
