France beat Croatia in the finals of FIFA World Cup 2018 held in Russia they lived up to the expectations football fans across the globe had.
Manchester United had reportedly made an attempt to sign France defender Lucas Hernandez who was a part of the Les Blues squad that won the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Lucas Hernandez dazzled everyone and played a big role in France’s title triumph.
His performance in Russia convinced Mourinho and Manchester United to go for him as the English Premier League reportedly were ready to trigger his release clause – which is set at €80 million – and they also offered him they would double his current wage should he join United.
However, a deal did not go through as the player remained firm on his stand to remain at Atletico Madrid. His denial affected Manchester United as they could sign any good additions to their defence before the summer transfer window slammed shut in England, to the frustration of coach Jose Mourinho.
The 22-year-old versatile defender has already become a regular for Atletico Madrid. He can ply his trade as left-back or as a Central defender. Since the 2014-15 season, Lucas has made 87 appearances for Atletico Madrid and will be looking to add more to his CV this season. He has also made 14 appearances for France and played for the Les Blues in all of their World Cup games in Russia.
Meanwhile, Manchester United still struggle to cope up with their defensive frailties. Their defence has become vulnerable and opponents have exploited and capitalized on it so far this season. Manchester United who have already lost two games in the English Premier League this season will face Watford, who aim to make it take their tally to 15 from 5 games, in their next fixture.
Had Lucas agreed to Manchester United’ offer, he would have been playing in the English Premier League this season. Since United have a weak defence, he would also have been earning regular playing time in the league. If he doesn’t want to regret his decision to snub Manchester United, he must play exceptionally well for Atletico Madrid this season.
