The Manchester United goalkeeper let a straightforward Lionel Messi shot slip under him for Barca’s second.
David De Gea has been a savior for Manchester United in recent times. His brilliance was the main reason why Manchester United finished second in the league last season. However, it seems this season he is performing below par. The Spaniard has made more mistakes this season than he has made in the past two seasons.
David de Gea is capable of reaching tremendous heights as a goalkeeper, and can also turn in a cringe-worthy moment or two. Unfortunately for De Gea, Tuesday saw the Manchester United stopper produce another one of the latter. The goal killed United hopes of progressing to a semi-final and were thrashed out of Champions League by Barcelona 4-0. Here’s what David De Gea said to his teammates after Barcelona mistake.
David De Gea admitted he cost his side their Champions League quarter-final with Barcelona. The Manchester United goalkeeper made a costly error as Lionel Messi doubled his side’s lead on the night and ultimately took the tie beyond the Red Devils. Philippe Coutinho added some gloss to the scoreline with De Gea said to be “inconsolable” at full-time.
Manchester United No.1 accepted responsibility and although his teammates didn’t blame him, he issued an apology in the away dressing room. De Gea is said to have held his hands up and claimed his team could have gone on to win the tie had it not been for his mistake. Messi had scored a brilliant goal in the 16th minute already, and his strike just four minutes gave his side a three-goal cushion on aggregate in the Champions League quarter-final. It is not the first time this season the former Atletico Madrid man has made a costly error.
The Spaniard’s future at Old Trafford remains unclear following the defeat at the Nou Camp. United do not plan to make a decision on his future this summer but may be forced to sell him or risk losing him for nothing next year. De Gea is demanding a salary in excess of £400,000-a-week and as things stand, United are not prepared to meet those expectations.
It could well be that a parting of the ways is deemed best for both parties, with De Gea having lost his form, and seemingly his focus. Paris Saint-Germain is ready to pounce and sign the Spaniard and offer him hefty wages. De Gea must forget his mistake and focus on Premier League as United face the Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea in the space of next eight days.
It’s good to see De Gea admitting his mistake in the dressing room. The Spaniard knows he isn’t at his best this season and the ongoing contract situation could be the reason for his poor performances.
