Just a few weeks ago, there were talks about sacking Mikel Arteta and Arsenal being relegation candidates. While their rivals Chelsea were considered to be title contenders. Fast forwards a few weeks later, Arsenal are now just three points behind Chelsea. What it is that has changed in recent weeks at Arsenal.
One of the things that many people have noticed is the comeback of teenage sensation Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian had his breakthrough season last season but a long-term injury halted his progress. Mikel Arteta slowly introduced him to the first team and took the big decision of starting him in the game against Chelsea.
Martinelli did not disappoint and along with his fellow young Arsenal stars, Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe also impressing. With the Brazilian’s comeback, the Gunners went on to beat Chelsea 3-1 and registered back to back wins against Brighton and West Brom. Though all the credit does not go to him, Mikel Arteta has also made some changes but the change in the team is evident since his comeback.
The Gunners have now put the rest of the relegation talks to rest. However, Mikel Arteta must make sure that Arsenal is able to continue this form. Right now they are just six points away from the top four spots. Arsenal fans must be hopeful that they are able to challenge for the top four spots. This season if they are able to challenge for the top four it should be considered a good season.
Rio Ferdinand and Ronaldinho on Martinelli
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was speaking on
In comparison to all these players it is clear that Martnelli has made more impact. Ferdinand also praised other Arsenal youngsters. he said “I think Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, they’ve been outstanding. Willock at times has come in and done stuff, same for Maitland-Niles.”
Even in the past, Ronaldinho has praised him, he said “We as Brazilians are very excited about him and his future, It is one thing to have the talent – but another at the age of 18 to have the confidence. He reminds me of Ronaldo his first season in Europe, he scored 30 goals and people were thinking: ‘who is this 18-year-old Brazilian kid?“
Comparisons to Ronaldo Lima himself by Ronaldinho can surely convince one about Martinelli’s hype. Though he hasn’t replicated Ronaldo himself he surely makes a good career in Europe. Ronaldinho said that he can similarity between the two, given how both play as attacking players. He said, ” He wanted the ball, he would run at players, there was no fear no matter what players or team he was playing against – and I see that similar attitude in Martinelli.“
Important thing for Martnelli
It is not for the first time a player is being hyped so much and it surely won’t’ be the last as well. However, the important thing for him would be to keep his head down and don’t believe in the hype so much. There are players who praised in a similar way like Martnelli but they failed to live up to their hype.
Anthony Martial breakthrough in the United’s team and everyone thought he was the next big thing. However, now he is 25 years and surely he hasn’t been able to fulfill that potential. Thus the most important thing for him is to work hard because the talent is there but it needs to work every week. Things look very good for him now.
He has a manager who is known for improving players. Under Arteta, he can improve and take his game to the next level. The Brazilian is at a top club and he is already a key player for them. The presence of players like Pierre Emmere Aubameyang can always have a good impact on him. In the Gabon international he has someone who can be a role model.
Right now the Gunners are playing very well and Martnelli has certainly made an impact. However, Mikel Arteta can’t solely rely upon him. Another thing for him is to find his best position, right now he is young and he can play in different positions. However, at one point in time, he has to settle down at one position and play there in the long term.
