Rio Ferdinand Criticizes Man Utd’s Treatment of Cristiano Ronaldo

Rio Ferdinand has criticized Manchester United’s treatment of Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese was left as unused substitute in their defeat to Manchester City.

Against Manchester City, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag fielded a starting XI that did not have Ronaldo in it. Ten Hag also chose not to bring Ronaldo on as a substitute.

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag explained his decision to not bring Ronaldo off the bench against their local rivals. Ten Hag said he did not play the 37-year-old out of respect for Ronaldo and for the career he’s had.

Ten Hag’s decision, though, has drawn criticism from many, including Roy Keane. The Man Utd legend accused the Old Trafford-outfit of showing disrespect to Ronaldo. Keane claimed Man Utd should not have hold on to Ronaldo in the summer just to keep him sitting on the bench.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand agreed with Keane’s take on the situation.

Ferdinand was also critical of Man Utd’s treatment of a player who finished last season as their top scorer.

You can’t have your top goalscorer, who scores 24 or 25 goals a season, on the bench. I’m sorry,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE.

He added: “People keeping talking about… And I see Roy Keane talking about it and I totally agree – why are we so concerned with what people don’t do all the time? What’s he good at? The hardest thing to do in football is score goals and this guy does it as good, if not better, than anybody.”

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has not had a good start to the 22/23 season. He was linked with a move away from Man Utd in the summer – just one season after he sealed a sensational return to the Premier League side.

Interest in Ronaldo, though, was few and far between, and the Portuguese ended up staying at Man Utd.

But he has seemingly lost his place in the Man Utd starting XI under manager Ten Hag. CR7 has featured in eight games for Man Utd so far this season, but only three have been as a starter. The rest were appearances off the bench.

Ronaldo has also struggled to score goals for the Red Devils this season. He had gone goalless in his first seven matches. He ended the drought with a penalty goal vs FC Sheriff in the Europa League.
