The Border Gavaskar Trophy series is currently level at 1-1. Australia and India are giving absolutely everything to dominate the third Test match which is being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Australia captain Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bat first. David Warner made a return to SCG Test after getting ruled out of the T20I series and the first two Tests due to injury.
Unfortunately, he had a bad day at the office. Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj provided a great start to the game by dismissing top batsman David Warner for just 5 runs. After early departure of Warner, Will Puckovski and Marnus Labuschagne slowly took the game away from the visiting team.
The duo frustrated the visitors by adding value to the scoreboard. Marnus and Will added a vital 100-run stand for the second wicket before Will was dismissed on 62. He was dismissed leg before wicket off Navdeep Saini’s bowling.
Poor day for Rishabh Pant
India’s wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant had a poor day at the office as he dropped two regulation catches to gift debutant Will Puckovski two lives on Day 1 of the SCG Test.
Initially, Will got all the luck on his debut after he was dropped on 26 by Pant. The incident happened during the last ball of the 22nd over when Ashwin bowled a good length delivery.
While Pukovski played for the turn, the ball travelled straight and as a result, the batsman got an inside edge. Rishabh Pant failed to respond to the incident quickly as he dropped a regular catch.
Usually, wicketkeepers tend to be alert on the field because they may expect catches anytime. Pant who is in the learning curve still has a lot of catching up to do to be a good wicketkeeper.
After he dropped a simple catch, Ravi Ashwin looked a bit frustrated and his emotions told everything. The veteran off-spinner was not at all happy as he stared at Pant for a few seconds.

Will gets second life as he scores his maiden fifty
A couple of overs later, Will got yet another chance as he was dropped by Pant once again. The incident took place during the last ball of the 25th over bowled by Mohammed Siraj. The pacer bowled a short ball and while Will tried to connect the ball, he ended up hitting it in the air.
Pant failed to take the catch in his pair of gloves and thus gifting another life to Will on 32. The debutant was quite lucky to have been dropped twice and he made use of the lives to good effect by scoring his maiden Test fifty.
He ended up scoring 62 off 110 balls including 4 fours to his name. Australia ended the Day 1 with 166/2. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith are batting on 67 and 31 respectively as the hosts are in total control of the game.
