Virat Kohli was the captain of the Indian cricket team across formats. However, as the years progressed a major change took place at Indian cricket, which surprised everyone in the cricket fraternity.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Rohit Sharma as the white-ball captain. The move came after Virat Kohli stepped down from the role. However, Virat was leading the Indian Test team.
All of a sudden, he also relinquished from the Test captaincy role. His decision came after a 1-2 series defeat at the hands of South Africa. Since then, Rohit Sharma became the captain of the Indian cricket across formats.
Under his full-time captaincy, India have performed incredibly well. They are yet to lose a series under Rohit’s captaincy. However, Rohit is 34 years old and we may not know how long he would lead India going forward.

Although he has few good years of cricket left in him, captaincy is something that comes quite naturally to him. However, at the same time, it’s more important to groom young cricketers as captains.
This might as well do wonders for the Indian cricket team. The likes of Lokesh Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah can be seen as the perfect captaincy materials of India.
Robin Uthappa says Jasprit Bumrah would be great for Test captaincy
Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer, Robin Uthappa has expressed his views on the future captains of Team India. According to him, Bumrah would be great for Test captaincy.
The BCCI named Jasprit Bumrah as the Test captain in Rohit Sharma’s absence for the rescheduled and fifth Test match against the England cricket team.
Under his captaincy, India approached the first innings ever so well before failing to turn up the ante in the second innings and went on to lose the game.
Going by the initial impressions, we can say Bumrah did a pretty decent job and he can surely improve going forward. On the other hand, Uthappa picked KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant as the future captain for ODIs.
“According to me, (Jasprit) Bumrah would be a great captain for Test cricket. For ODI, the choices would be KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant,” former Indian opener Uthappa told in a ShareChat’s Audio Chatroom session – ‘CricChat Powered by Parimatch’.
KL Rahul still has plenty of things to improve as a captain, although he is a good captaincy material. Under his captaincy, India lost the three-match ODI series against Proteas. The Men in Blue whitewashed by South Africa by 0-3 in overseas conditions. However, under Rishabh Pant’s captaincy, India drew 2-2 against South Africa in T20I series, with the fifth match getting abandoned due to rain.
