The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the squads for three formats during the IPL. The national selectors ignored Rohit Sharma for the overseas tour. KL Rahul was named vice-captain for the limited-overs series against Australia.
The Hitman sustained a hamstring injury during the league stage match against Kings XI Punjab. Due to this, he had to miss some games and Kieron Pollard led the team. BCCI told that its medical team is monitoring Rohit Sharma’s progress.
After missing four games, Rohit returned to the last league stage game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Rohit Sharma’s team defeated Delhi Capitals in the first qualifier before beating them in the finals. Rohit played a captain’s knock in the finals by scoring 68 off 51.
Besides R. Sharma, even Ishant Sharma had picked up an injury as well. He was ruled out of this season’s IPL after he picked up an internal muscle tear. Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals missed his services in the latter stages of the season.
What did BCCI do earlier?
There were claims that Rohit is not “fully fit” to take part in the Australia tour. Earlier, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly added that Rohit should attain the desired levels of fitness in order to get a ticket to play a full-fledged tour in Australia.
Fans, cricket experts, and commentators questioned why Rohit Sharma was not added in the squad. When Rohit was asked about the same, he clarified that his hamstring was fine. He also declared that he is fit to play games.
Weeks after the squads were announced, BCCI dropped yet another major update. The board made several changes in all three squads. Rohit who was ignored earlier had been picked for the Test series. BCCI clarified that Rohit has been rested for ODIs and T20Is.
There were also reports and speculations about Ishant Sharma’s inclusion as well. The right-arm fast bowler was recovering from injury. With a lot of time available to play the Test series, Ishant was included in Team India’s Test squad.
Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma will miss the Australia tour
In a fresh development that stunned the Indian cricket fraternity, Rohit and Ishant are unlikely to play against Australia. Earlier, both the players were included in the Team India Test squad. Ishant has been undergoing treatment in Bangalore.
Meanwhile, Ravi Shastri conceded that he has absolutely no idea about the two players’ availability. “Rohit was never going to play the white-ball series, they were just looking to see how long he needed the rest because you can’t afford to be resting for too long.
You don’t really know how quickly Ishant be available to fly out. As I said, if anyone has to play in the Test series, he has to be on the flight in the next four or five days. Otherwise, it’s very difficult,” said the Indian team chief coach.
If reports doing the rounds are to be believed then selectors may name Shreyas Iyer as Rohit’s replacement. For the unversed, Iyer played T20Is in the last before year. Iyer also made his ODI debut that year. However, he is yet to make a debut in Test.
