Rohit Sharma tweets an emotional message for Steven Smith
The unwanted incident of ball tampering occurred last Saturday at Newlands, Cape Town. Cameron Bancroft was caught changing the condition of the ball on the live cameras.
Later, the Australia captain Steven Smith and vice-captain David Warner admitted to be part of the plan. Hard punishments were given to all three of them by the ICC and Cricket Australia (CA).
Steven Smith has been banned from playing international cricket and state cricket for 1 year and he his refrained from becoming the captain of the national team for the next 2 years. His IPL franchisee Rajasthan Royals also banned him from taking a part in this year’s IPL.
CA asked all the three of them to be back in Australia and they were immediately deported back to their home country. The video of the South African police officials escorting Smith as the people around were calling him a ‘cheat’ on the airport surfaced and it was quite disheartening to watch the Test No. 1 batsman been handled in such a way.
Mumbai Indians’ captain Rohit Sharma was initially asked about his views on the ball-tampering incident and he had said,“I don’t know if its relevant for me to comment about that because we (are) sitting so far away and I don’t know what must have happened there and any one of us to comment about it because we have no idea as to what must have happened there.”
Another video of the press conference that Steven Smith attended with hi father attended in Sydney went viral. Smith was clearly gutted and emotional about everything that happened in Cape Town. His father was seen consoling him during the interview and it was getting really tough for him to speak.
After watching both those videos, Rohit tweeted,”The video of Steve Smith being escorted at the airport and his most recent press conference resonated with me. The spirit of the game is of utmost importance there’s no denying that. They made a mistake and they accepted it. It would be unfair of me to sit here and question the boards decision but they are great players and I don’t think this should define them.”
