Manchester United’s home defeat against Manchester City in Carabao Cup’s semifinal had to draw some criticism. Manchester United legend Roy Keane is lately known for his bold comments. It was quite natural to expect some criticism from the former United player against how the team played yesterday.
This time his comments involved the player who has been praised worldwide. Bruno Fernandes had an off day in the office against City yesterday. He failed to provide a spark in the team and missed a few key passes as well. Let’s see what Roy Keane had to say on his yesterday’s performance.
‘Bruno Fernandes is no Eric Cantona’
Bruno Fernandes is the most important part of this United team. His delightful performances have forced fans to compare him with Manchester United legend Eric Cantona. Former United player, Paul Ince, also stated that Bruno Fernandes has raised the game of players around him just like Eric Cantona did after he arrived from Leeds United at Old Trafford.
Paul Ince believed that Cantona set higher goals for the whole team and that’s what drove the individuals to achieve the glory. In his view, Bruno Fernandes has done the same and just needs a trophy to justify his effect.
Contrary to this, Roy Keane believed that Fernandes’ poor performance against Man City in the semi-final showed that he should not be compared with Cantona right away. It was a big game for United, especially after being knocked out of the previous three semi-finals, but Fernandes failed to produce anything noticeable against Man City.
“It’s not easy, it’s not easy winning football trophies. Fernandes has had great praise and over the past month, people have been comparing him to people like Eric Cantona. But Cantona [won trophies]. Fernandes didn’t really do much tonight” said Roy Keane.
Bruno has been at Man United for more than a year now but has failed to take his team to the ultimate glory. Currently, United is considered a strong challenger for Premier League, Europa League, and FA Cup. According to Keane, star players like Bruno needs to carry the team in the big matches. That’s when their character as a leader is really tested.
Keane added “the top players turn up on the big occasions, and that’s what the Cantona’s used to do to get their hands on trophies. And that’s where this team is a little bit short.”
Bruno remains Man United’s talisman
Even though Bruno Fernandes is yet to win a trophy with the Reds, we cannot avoid the fact of how pivotal he has been to the side. In 16 Premier League games this season, he has scored 11 goals and assisted 7 times. That means 18 goal involvement in 16 games! After Harry Kane (21), Bruno Fernandes (18) has the most goal involvements in Premier League this season.
His standout performances have helped the Reds to climb to the second spot of the league table. They have accumulated the same number of points as the league leaders, Liverpool, but missed out on the first spot due to a lower goal difference.
Liverpool’s latest defeat to Southampton means that Manchester United have a game in hand now. If they win that game, they can leapfrog Liverpool to the first spot on the table. A sight which every Man United supporter will love to see!
Not only as a player but also as a leader, he is having a great effect on current Man United’s side. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to be mindful of overusing him. Bruno, being the most important player, needs to be kept injury-free. A suspension or an injury to the Portuguese midfielder can severely hamper Manchester United’s season.
