Since Frank Lampard took over at Chelsea, Mason Mount has been a regular for him. The duo worked together during Mount’s loan spell at Derby where Lampard was in charge. Though many have justified his inclusion in the squad, many have often questioned Lampard’s decision to constantly pick him over others.
There was widespread talk about it on social media especially when Gareth Southgate picked him ahead of Jack Grealish. Along with Southgate, Lampard was also criticized as it was alleged that he does favoritism towards Mount. Recently the Chelsea manager has been under intense pressure as Chelsea results continue to suffer.
The latest one being the humiliating defeat 1-3 to Manchester City. It was a home game for Chelsea but it was humiliating, not because of the scoreline but because the was City outclassed them. At times it looked like Pep Guardiola’s team we’re playing against a U-16 team. The Citizens were mocking with their passing after being 3-0 up and the Blues could hardly do anything about it.
This defeat comes in the backdrop of defeat against Arsenal, who were in dreadful form and 1-1 draw against Aston Villa. Thus it was obvious that there would be reactions from the media. While the whole Chelsea team was awful except for the cameo appearances from Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson Odoi but Roy Keane pointed Mason Mount.
Roy Keane slams Mount’s frightened moment
That Chelsea dressing room is actually very lucky. It is spine chilling to consider what Roy Keane would have done to a dressing room if he was at Chelsea. The Sky Sports pundit pointed out that Mason Mount was frightened to make a tackle to stop Ilkay Gundogan. The German scored the first goal for City after some superb work.
Keane believes that Mount was just ball watching, while he also pointed out that the centre back should do well. He said “Mason Mount, he’s standing there as a midfielder getting back. The centre-half has got to do better but Mason Mount is watching him, he’s got to put a challenge in.”
According to the Manchester United legend, Mount is more of an attacking midfielder but he has to sacrifice and make a tackle. He said, “I know Mount is more of an attacking player – but he’s got to put his foot in, make a sacrifice, tackle him!” Keane said that the Englishman should have been more aggressive rather than doing nothing.
Mount’s just come into the picture there, I’m looking at him going: You’ve got to slide in! Stick your foot in! Look at Mount, he’s done absolutely nothing. Put your foot in! Tackle somebody! You’ve got to be aggressive.’
Graeme Souness tried to defend Mount by saying that perhaps, he was freighted to give away a penalty. To which Keane replied he was frightened anyway all over the pitch. He said “I think he was just frightened anyway, no matter where it was on the pitch!’”
The12th Man Opinion
It is clear that Roy Keane hasn’t watched Chelsea a lot. Mason Mount is every present and Frank Lampard has justified his selection because of his work rate and defensive contribution. However, Roy Keane has just busted this argument. There is no doubt that Lampard is biased towards Mount and he does favoritism, he is very partial towards Mount.
There are so many games where he has played him out of position even when better players are available. At times Chelsea has suffered because of it, as Mount is unable to contribute in attack and bypassed very easily in defense. Lampard has never justified his decision to play him as a winger despite having Hudson Odoi, while Mount also failed to justify that with his performances as a winger. Even his 4-3-3 formation has been a way to include Mount.
It is no rocket science to know that Havertz best position is a No.10. However, he is not played there because it upsets Mount, while the Englishman is clearly not good enough in a two-man midfield. Lampard has often set up his team to suit Mount. It would have been understandable if he was performing well but he has been average. Lampard’s obsession with Mount can be seen from the fact that he is willing to jeopardize Havertz for him.
Some would refer to the stats about Mason Mount seen on social media, of what a season he is having. However, stats can be always manipulated in any way. The truth is, he is not good enough and a gulf in class can be seen when he plays against top teams like Bayern and City. Though it may seem harsh, unfortunately, that the truth. Even players like Salah and Mane track back and defend but they also perform on the other side of the pitch. It may seem odd but Lampard must drop Mount to save his job.
