SA vs SL LIVE: South Africa captain Temba Bavuma must be a happy man after seeing his teammates perform consistently against Sri Lanka. The Proteas now sit in third place in Group 1 table.
South Africa haven’t given up yet. They might have started their campaign with a defeat over Australia but they made a great comeback in the next two games. South Africa defeated West Indies in their second game.
Now, they defeated Sri Lanka at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bowl first. They kept the Sri Lankans in check, more often than not.
Pathum Nissanka was the pick of the batsmen for Sri Lanka. He scored 72 off 58 balls with the help of 6 fours and 3 sixes. Asalanka scored 21 runs while other players departed for cheap scores.
On the other hand, Anrich Nortje took 2 wickets for South Africa. Tabraiz Shami and Dwaine Pretorius took three wickets apiece. In the end, Sri Lanka managed to post 142 at the expense of all the wickets.
South Africa lost three wickets early on in the run-chase. Proteas captain Temba Babuma led the batting attack by example. He top-scored with 46 off 46 balls including 1 four and a six.
David Miller scored a productive 23 off 13 balls including 2 powerful sixes. South Africa won the game by 4 wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka.
He accounted for three dismissals in his quota of 4 overs and conceded 20 runs at an economy of 5. Dushmantha took 2 wickets to his name where he conceded 27 runs at an economy of 6.80.
“It’s hard to keep everything at the back of my mind, and we had a job to do. We took it deep and it was a good thing that we managed to get over the line,” Bavuma said at the post-match presentation.
“David hasn’t done that for us in a while, and it’s great that he came good at the right time. Shamsi is a good player for us, he’s been effective all over the world in this format and he’s been doing this for quite a while now,” he said.
“I took on the responsibility to soak the pressure. The shot was on, but I am a bit annoyed that I couldn’t execute it well enough,” Temba Bavuma concluded.
Tabraiz Shamsi was named the Man of the Match. “My first Man of the Match trophy in the World Cup, so it’s a special moment, but not to take anything away from Nortje, Markram, Miller and Rabada, they played their parts really well,” he said.
