Former Indian selector said that dropping Axar Patel from the T20 World Cup 2021 India squad was a harsh call, especially considering his impressive performance for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. Axar Patel picked 15 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 20.40. He was Delhi’s second-highest wicket-taker behind Avesh Khan.

After dropping Axar Patel from the Indian squad, selectors picked Shardul Thakur. He took 18 wickets in 15 matches in the Indian Premier League at an average of 27.17. Shardul Thakur was there in the reserves when the selectors announced the Indian team for the multi-nation tournament.

Saba Karim mentioned that selectors picked Thakur as a backup for Hardik Pandya. In the UAE leg of the Indian Premier League, Pandya didn’t bowl a single over for the Mumbai Indians. It raised suspicion over the fact that he will Pandya be able to bowl during the 2021 T20 World Cup?

Recently, Shardul Thakur has been one of the consistent performers for the Indian team. His efforts have led India to victory in all the formats of the game. It disappointed a lot of fans when the selectors didn’t pick him for the T20 World Cup 2021 India squad.

Shardul Thakur has already created a name for himself through the limited opportunities that he has received. He played an essential role in the Test series against Australia and England.

Saba Karim mentioned that the Indian team had several spinners in the squad. The selectors were looking for a player who would act as a backup seam bowling all-rounder.

However, he also mentioned that it was a harsh call to drop Axar Patel from the T20 World Cup 2021 India squad. Patel did a decent job for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He won two players of the match awards during the UAE leg of the tournament.

Karim feels that Shardul will come in handy if Hardik Pandya misses out on the Indian team due to illness or injury. Hardik Pandya was the only seam-bowling all-rounder on the team.

Pandya didn’t bowl a single over in the UAE leg of the Indian Premier League. However, Saba feels that he is an integral part of India’s middle-order. His power-hitting abilities will be helpful for the Indian team.

Saba also added that Hardik Pandya is a match-winner and has proved his worth on many occasions in the past. He is one of the best batting all-rounders on the Indian team. If Hardik bowls in the T20 World Cup, he would be a vital asset as the sixth bowling option in the T20 World Cup 2021 India squad.

In the 2020 season of the IPL, which was played in UAE, Pandya made 281 runs in 14 matches at an average of 35.12 and a strike rate of 178.98. He hit the third-highest number of sixes in the tournament.

However, he didn’t bowl a single over in the 2020 edition of the league as he underwent surgery to treat an acute lower-back injury.
