The sacking season in football swallows another coach. Regretfully or not, sackings are done for the betterment of the club, and one cannot argue the justifiability of one, no matter how big of a hot-shot the man was. Still, there will always be two reactions for an opinion, neither is wrong.

The Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen sacked coach Roger Schmidt regardless of still being in the champion’s league. Till now in this season there have been eight sackings by Bundesliga clubs and Schmidt makes it ninth.

This comes after his team suffered their fourth loss in the last six league games with a 6-2 humiliation by Borussia Dortmund.

“Due to the current sporting development we reached the conclusion after a long analysis that parting ways may be painful but unavoidable for the further development of Leverkusen,” said the club’s managing director Michael Schade.

“I personally feel sorry for this decision because we have a lot to thank Roger Schmidt for. In his time we qualified three times for the Champions League group stage.”

Schmidt joined the club in July of 2014 and had a contract until 2019. But the 49-year-old was released from his duties after the four continuous defeats and with Leverkusen caught up in mid-table.

“During his term, we have qualified for the group stages of the Champions League three times and he has also implemented our philosophy of developing young players into internationals and thus creating lasting values.”– Michael Schade (club’s managing director)

It all started with Leverkusen’s  embarrassing 4-2 first-leg defeat at home to Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League on February 21 and they’ll travel to Atletico Madrid on March 15 for the return leg of their Champions League round-of-16 match.

However, the club failed to progress past the round of 16 in the Champions League on each of the three occasions the club has qualified under Schmidt and but have lost 11 of their 23 league games this season making it their worst performance in Bundesliga season in 14 years.

Leverkusen will have a new coach for the return leg against Atletico on March 15 and an interim coach has not yet been named.
