Manchester city take on Chelsea at the Etihad stadium on Sunday in a match that could have some serious implications on the title race as well as the race for a top 4 finish
Going into the game, Manchester city lead the standings on goal difference with 62 points from 26 games. Liverpool are second with the same number of points but do have 1 game in hand. Chelsea, meanwhile, are 4th with 50 points and are being closely chased by a resurgent Manchester united and Arsenal. At the moment, there are 3 sides fighting for the 4th spot and all are within 3 points of each other.
Maurizio Sarri is among the very few men who have been able to get the better of Pep Guardiola this season. Chelsea emerged victorious 2-0 over the defending champions when the two sides met earlier at Stamford Bridge in December. N’Golo Kante and David Luiz found the net for the Blues on that occasion. Sarri will be hoping for more of the same as we enter the business end of the season. And apparently, Sarri has a gameplan for getting the better of Guardiola yet again,
“I think we were lucky [in the last match vs City] because we scored in a very difficult moment in the match,” the Italian told a press conference on Friday.
“Maybe we deserved to win in the second half, but we were very lucky in the first. In that match we defender very well as they only had three opportunities on goal, no more.
“It’s not easy against City to limit them to three or four opportunities – they had scored 43 goals in 15 matches, so it’s difficult and we need to defend well.
“I was happy with the result and the performance, now we need consistency. I hope that on Sunday we’ll be the best version [of ourselves].
We need to be very fast when we’re recovering the ball. They are able to press really well and it’s difficult to find a way out of that situation.
“If we can do that, we can do well.”
Doing the double over Manchester city is not going to be easy, but Chelsea does have the capability to do that.
