Barcelona are struggling in defense department. The Nou Camp side have side conceded the most goals in 12 games for the first time since the days of Johan Cryuff. It’s interesting to see that the La Liga champions departed defenders during the summer transfer window. It seems that was the wrong move. However, this former Barcelona star said that the Catalan giants wanted him to stay.
Lucas Digne explained to Goal.com that he didn’t plan on leaving Barca. The Frenchman also said that Ernesto Valverde and co didn’t want to sell him. However, the former PSG player was convinced by Marco Silva, Everton’s coach. The 25-year-old left-back has earned a France recall for the forthcoming matches against Netherlands and Uruguay thanks to his excellent early season form with the Toffees.
He admitted it was a tough call to leave Barcelona, however, he felt the challenge Marco Silva laid down to him at Goodison Park was too attractive to turn down. Digne said, “I wasn’t really planning to leave Barca and they were not looking to sell me. but when I spoke to Everton manager Marco Silva on the phone I got this special feeling. He really lit a fire inside of me and I thought: ‘Wow! I really want to play for this club and manager.'”
The Frenchman also said that the Nou Camp side didn’t want to sell him. He said, “Then I went to Barca and asked them to please let me go. After a few talks, they accepted. I am thankful for that, because now I feel happy in Everton. Barca was my childhood dream, so yes, it was difficult to leave, because I could have stayed to continue a great life in the club and the city. The club wanted me to stay.”
It’s good to see Barcelona fulfilling it’s wish. Digne was always in the shadow of Jordi Alba during his time at Catalan giants. At Everton, we can see it’s potential and his impressive performances has got him a place in France’s national team.
