The Reds considered signing Jose Mourinho in the past. They have explained now why the club ended up to not to make him their manager.
The 42-year-old explained it all came up in the summer of 2004. When Gerard Houllier departed. Jamie Carragher was playing for Liverpool at that time.
He revealed Mourinho’s name along with Rafa Benitez to fill the vacant position of a Liverpool manager.
When the Portuguese manager was at Porto and won Primeira Liga for the 2nd consecutive year. He also won the Champions league with Fc Porto. Rafa Benitez was also doing well for Valencia.
He won his 2nd La Liga title in three years as well as helping the Spanish side to win the Uefa Cup.
Jamie Carragher believes Mourinho might have the edge between him and Benitez. But it was Rafa Benitez’s management style that saw him took over the Liverpool Job.
“I knew much more about Rafa Benitez, because of Spanish football. But I think the feeling was there that Jose couldn’t be a Liverpool manager.”
Carragher told sky sports
Rafa Benitez ended up spending six years at Liverpool before the movie to Serie A club, Inter Milan in 2010.
During his time at Liverpool, he won the champions league, the Fa Cup and the Uefa Super Cup, but was not able to win the Premier League title. His side came close in 2009, with just 4 points behind Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Mourinho left Porto and joined Chelsea in 2004 for three seasons, referring himself as the “The Special One”. During his first spell at Chelsea, he won back to back Premier League titles, as well as Fa cup and League cups.
He left Chelsea for Inter Milan in 2008, and then he was replaced by Rafa Benitez in 2010, two years later.
Jamie Carragher always thought Liverpool will plump for Rafa Benitez as manager over Jose Mourinho. He believes the Spanish manager is a little more standoffish.
Although, the Portuguese manager’s name was mentioned after the sacking of Gerard Houllier’s sacking at Anfield. Liverpool signed Benitez over Mourinho.
