Is Southampton’s Nathan Redmond More Than Just A Lucky Debut?

Southampton debutant Nathan Redmond showcased an impressive performance and looks like a good fit for Southampton.  Last Saturday, he scored a debut goal in the 1-1 draw with Watford at St Mary’s stadium. He arrived from Norwich City only this summer, but his partnership with Shane Long worked wonders for the Saints. They just need to practice among themselves a bit more to strengthen and improve their bond on the field, because this looks like it has the potential to become a killer-duo.

Part of England’s Under 21 squad, Redmond had two shots on target, with Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes stopping the ball to deny him just before the equaliser. The reason why Redmond was a delight to watch was not only because of the goal he scored. He was so lively and active throughout the game, and that is further illustrated by the fact that he made four key passes during the game. His teammate Dušan Tadić outnumbered him with six passes, but that itself is a good sign coming from a debutant.

Honestly, there was a good chance of Southampton winning the match, thanks to a strike by Redmond again. Unfortunately, it was called offside. The game ended in a 1-1 draw eventually and both sides took home a share of the spoils.

So far in his career, Redmond usually was deployed as a wide man, but Puel took a gamble and started him up front against Watford, and that did work in their favour after all. Claude Puel was so impressed with him, that he actually compared Redmond to Thierry Henry.

However, Redmond did mention in an interview that he does not see himself as a full-time striker, and that he could still play on the wing for most of his career, in spite of the fact that he actually fared better than most Southampton strikers during pre-season and on Saturday’s draw against Watford.

When it comes to Southampton vs Manchester United, Redmond failed to do much though. The problem is that he is at a stage from where he can either go on to become greater, or he might succumb to the demands of the Premier League and fall back.

He did impress everybody during his debut, but against the Red Devils, Redmond started on the right foot and picked up a lot of good positions and seemed dangerous. He does need to work on his decision-making though, because as the game progressed, he missed a lot of chances and did not seem like his head was in the game. He needs to be able to develop a quicker thought process when thrust under high-pressure games.

Having said that, Southampton is the club best known for developing and nurturing young, raw talent, and in that regard, it would seem like Redmond is in the right place and will be getting a lot of opportunities. What he makes of it, is what remains to be seen.
