Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the Carabao Cup as they were defeated 4-2 on penalties by Chelsea
Spurs had a 1 nil lead going into the second leg, courtesy of a Harry Kane penalty in the first leg at Wembley. The second leg ended 2-1 in favor of the home side after 90 minutes. Goals from N’golo Kante and Eden Hazard meant that the Blues went into the halftime break with a 2 goal lead. However, soon after the restart, Spurs’ Spanish striker Fernando Llorente pulled one back from a Danny Rose cross.Thereafter, neither side was able to find the decisive goal within 90 minutes.
And then it was down to penalties and which set of players would be able to hold their nerves. Eriksen scored his spot kick and so did Willian for Chelsea. Lamela and Azpilicueta were equally clinical. Eric Dier then blazed his penalty well over the goal and Chelsea’s subsequent kick was converted by Jorginho. Lucas Moura’s tame effort was comfortably saved by Kepa, meaning that Chelsea would qualify if David Luiz were to score the next kick. And that’s exactly what the Brazilian did after a rather long run-up. The Blues will take on English champions Manchester city in the finals of the Carabao cup.
Spurs were without a host of first-team players as Son, Kane and Alli were all unavailable. It meant that the likes of Llorente and Lamela had a great opportunity to impress the manager. However, they were rather poor on the night, especially Lamela. The Argentine barely produced anything of substance throughout the 90 minutes. And the Spurs fans who were not at all impressed by his outing took to Twitter to bash him.
The 26 year old has’t been enjoying his best of seasons in the Spurs shirt, as he has fallen down the pecking order behind Son and Moura. Overall, Lamela has made 23 appearances this season for Spurs and has found the net 6 times in addition to 3 assists.
It was a great opportunity for Erik Lamela to prove to Pochettino and the Spurs fans that they could rely on him in the absence of Son. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite turn out that way.
