Manager Mauricio Pochetino explained the need for fresh legs in taking the decision to bench Son Heung Min.
South Korean national team captain Son scored the winning goal during Tuesday’s Champions League quarter final first leg win over Mancehster City and the Spurs manager admitted he can ill-afford to risk further injuries with his squad already stretched to breaking point.
Injuries to Tottenham best players like Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Harry Winks forced the Tottenham manager into making seven changes for the visit of Jan Siewert’s already relegated side.
What Mauricio Pochetino said is something like this,
“It’s a very important game after the Champions League against Manchester City. We are forced to make changes with a few injuries to Harry Kane, Harry Winks and Dele Alli. Then because we need fresh players and full of energy. It will be a very difficult game. We have a good squad and we take the decision that to win the game we need full energy from beginning.
It’s going to be collective effort and we must work like a team. Of course the players up front must make the difference but the most important thing is the performance of the whole team. We need to be serious and be professional in the way we approach the game. It will be tough, we don’t know how they are going to react and behave. We are sad because we miss the best player in the world and that is a big miss for any team. We need to move on and be optimistic we need to believe in ourselves and try to perform in the best way. I am always believing in my squad and my players.”
Spurs are already dealing with the injuries of their top players and the players have been sidelined for quite a period that means some are fated to miss the champions League final or semi final. Amid the injuries Pochetino already stated that he cannot afford injuries anymore that is why the clutched Korean striker was asked to be benched in the match against Huddersfield because he could play in the upcoming fixtures.
