Manchester United have long been interested in signing him as a defensive reinforcement but failed to do so in recent transfer windows.
Belgian defender and Tottenham Hotspur player Toby Alderweireld has hinted at a Spurs stay despite rumours of a move to Manchester United this summer.
The Belgian has long been in Manchester United’s list of interested defenders. United have been suffering from their leaky defence for a while and it is strongly believed that some new defenders will join the club as they look to rebuild the squad.
The player told Sport360 that he has a year left on his contract and in his head he will be playing for Tottenham Hotspur next season. He said, “I’m going to say the same thing that I’ve been saying for the past couple of years.”
“The only focus is Spurs, because of this focus I think I had a good season as well. I have one year left on my contract, so in my head, I will play for Spurs next season,” he added.
The defender is now prepared to play for Tottenham Hotspur in the final of UEFA Champions League against another English Premier League outfit Liverpool. If they win, it will be their first European trophy.
The player also claimed Tottenham deserve to win the Champions League and it has not been an easy journey for the North London club in the competition. He said, “We are going to do everything to win it and if we win it I think we deserve it as well. If you see our route in the Champions League, it has not been easy.”
“In the group Barcelona and Inter, [Borussia] Dortmund in Germany, [Man] City first in England and Ajax in Holland so it was a very tough route. I think the mentality of the team showed us that we can achieve anything we want,” he added explaining the tougher fixtures they have had to overcome en route to final.
Manchester United want new players to rearguard their defence and Alderweireld is top on their list. It remains to be seen if Manchester United can lure the player away from Spurs. If he moves to United, he will certainly be awarded a role in the starting XI, given how porous United defence have become.
