Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar once again highlighted the importance of MS Dhoni in the Indian cricket team, especially for skipper Virat Kohli.
Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni has been criticized a lot by various former cricketers and fans with regards to his lack of form with the bat in recent times. This gradually raised a big question of whether he should be included in the squad for the World Cup. However, Indian skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri have always come up in support of the veteran wicketkeeper batsman whenever the question has been raised surrounding his place in the team.
Virat Kohli has gone on to become one of the most successful skippers in the world over the last few years but he still opts for Dhoni’s advice every now and then. There is always the need for an experienced player on the pitch who can help the skipper in taking his decision during crunch moments of the game. MS Dhoni is a former skipper who has already been into the shoes of captaincy in the World Cup hence is the best person to turn to for any advice whenever needed.
“I think the best thing for Virat Kohli is that he is got MS Dhoni as a keeper. You can see whenever he is in the deep, MS Dhoni helps him with the field, talks to the bowlers in crucial situations,” Gavaskar said during the India Today Conclave 2019 while highlighting one of the areas where Dhoni’s presence helps Kohli.
“Your best fielder should be at the deep during the death overs. That’s where MSD comes into play, telling the bowlers what to do,” he added.
“Appreciate the chemistry between both. Both of them share a lot of respect. Their chemistry is going to help us at the World Cup,” Gavaskar opined.
As far as the bowling unit is concerned, India has been at an epitome level in their bowling performance. The team has managed to excel regardless of any department, be it pace or spin. Gavaskar believes that the Indian bowlers currently possess the ability to pick wickets regardless of the conditions.
“India has got an attack which can bowl in any kind of conditions, not just Indian. An attack that can take wickets because if you keep taking wickets, you can push the opposition back. Yes, there are teams that can go past 280, 300 against this Indian attack. But then, India has got the batting to chase that,” the Little Master went to conclude.
Apart from the experience Dhoni has, there are several other factors which make Dhoni indispensable for the team at the moment. While Kohli is aggressive in nature when it comes to captaining the side, Dhoni is just the opposite, totally calm and composed irrespective of the match situation. He rapport with the Indian skipper would definitely bring in the much needed balance in the team as far as the leadership of the team is concerned.
Dhoni is also excellent at guiding the spinners from behind the stumps and possesses a really good ability when it comes to judging the DRS system, parallely giving it the popular name “Dhoni Review System”. There is no questioning on how fabulous he is in his keeping skills. Last but not the least, he is the most experienced guy in the middle order for Team India and would be the man to turn to in case of a collapse from the top order.
