Barcelona has not had the greatest start to the season with defensive errors leading to them dropping valuable points in the league.
Samuel Umtiti’s knee injury means Barcelona has only three fit center-backs at the moment. Pique has been very inconsistent, Langlet is still adjusting to the new system while Vermaelen is not really a reliable long-term option and has a contract expiring at the end of the season.
The limited options at the heart of the defense are not something that will keep Valverde up in the night. If reports are to be believed there is a surprise contender to plug the holes in the center of the defense. Chelsea loanee Kurt Zouma is said to be the long-term successor of Gerrard Pique.
Kurt Zouma is a talented young player, showing potential but not being able to nail down a spot in the Blues’ first team. Out of form since his crushing knee injury back in 2016. Loan spells followed, but Zouma is yet to hit his pre-injury form.
Moving for Zouma could prove to be a very shrewd signing. At 23 he still has a long time to realize his potential. Signing him could give him the time to fit into the system and get used to playing the Barcelona way. Being right-footed he would bring much-needed balance to the backline. At the moment Pique is the only right footed center back in the squad.
Zouma isn’t ready for a move to a club like Barcelona. Over the past few years, he has been very inconsistent and hence has been loaned out multiple times. Yes, he does have a lot of potential but the past few years have been disappointing. Rather a player like Matthijs de Ligt could be a much better signing. Constantly putting in great performances week in and week out.
