Antonio Conte speaks out on Southampton performance

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has said that his players played with great concentration but the 1-0 scoreline was not a very soothing one.

Chelsea came away with 3 points against Southampton at Stamford Bridge as Marcos Alonso’s free-kick separated the sides. Conte was critical of his side’s finishing where they managed to salvage only a single goal despite having 8 shots on target.

Conte stated: “This season we’ve created many chances, but we must be more accurate with the finishing. When you score more than one goal, you can stay more relaxed. Me, as well as my players.”

Conte had initially mentioned that his side would have a tough time against Southampton who have proved to give the top flight teams a run for their money. He added:  “Yesterday during the press conference I said we had to pay great attention to play against Southampton. This is a good team.”

Conte concluded by saying that he was happy with the temperament of the players. He mentioned:   “I’m happy because my players played a game with great concentration. We deserved to win. When the score is only 1-0, despite the fact you create many chances to score a second goal, you don’t stay more relaxed. But I’m happy because I saw the right attention, the right commitment of my players. We finished with a clean sheet. I think it’s important for our goalkeeper, for our team.

Author’s take

The performance against the Saints was a professional one- the kind Chelsea are known for. If the Blues are to put any kind of threat for one of the major titles on offer, they will have to keep dispatching their opposition in the same fashion- without too much fuss.
