On Thursday, June 30, Cricket South Africa (CSA) made a crucial decision. According to reports, Thabiso Enoch Nkwe has been named the director of cricket. This is undoubtedly a beneficial move for Protease.
Enoch played for the Lions as a professional cricketer. That was before his career-ending injury pushed him into an early retirement. He participated in 42 First Class, 38 List A, and 9 T20 matches. Enoch has a lot of expertise creating plans for high-performance systems.
The 39-year-old is said to have great social, analytical, and organizational skills. He has refined cricketing systems and led teams, placing a focus on hiring practices and teamwork.
He formerly served as Lions Cricket’s Technical Director. Furthermore, he was in charge of reviewing the CGL cricket structures’ current high-performance approaches and methods. The aim is to solely focus on a medium-term and long-term strategy.
Cricket South Africa Have Named Thabiso Enoch Nkwe as Director of Cricket
Last August, Nkwe served as the Proteas team’s assistant coach. That was before he began working for the Highveld Lions as a strategic cricket consultant. When South Africa visited India in 2019, he was also named interim director.
The current Director of Cricket for South Africa will succeed legendary Protease cricketer Graeme Smith. Additionally, the latter decided not to have his contract renewed in March of this year.
Nkwe has held a variety of jobs and has vast expertise in his line of work. He formerly held the position of head coach with the Jozi Stars and Gauteng Strikers. He has also served as an assistant coach for four distinct teams in the meantime.
With such a CV to his name, it came as no surprise that Cricket South Africa hired the veteran coach. He holds a Level IV Coaching Certificate which is quite the indicator of his expertise.
“I’ll respect their process and I’ll continue to move forward and focus on what I need to do next in terms of my career. The matter now sits between the coach and the organization. Whatever happens at the end of that process, I hope the outcome will be one that’s best for the game,” Nkwe told Sports24 after the dismissal of Mark Boucher’s disciplinary hearing.
The board also hired three other members. Tjaart van der Walt was hired as the Chief Financial Officer, while Mtunzi Jonas was brought on as the Chief Commercial Officer. Wanele Mngomezulu was named as the chief marketing officer in the meantime. The Director of Cricket will start working on July 1, 2022, while the other three executives will start on August 1.
