In the 2019 season, Chelsea was under a transfer ban. Frank Lampard was appointed and many expected him to use players from Chelsea’s loan army. Mason Mount is one such player who has been benefitted hugely from the transfer ban.
Frank Lampard’s appointment has also been crucial for Mount. The club legend is a big reason for him to establish himself as a regular for Chelsea. Lampard has given more opportunities than Mount to any other player. Last season he made 52 appearances for the club.
He scored seven goals and further provided seven assists. Mount is heavily reliant on his work rate and off the ball work. Lampard has often cited his work rate as a reason to include him in the starting eleven. He is also very good at pressing at the opposition defenders.
The Englishman is a favorite for Lampard and he loves to play him more than any other player. It is very rare that Mount is given a rest. However, in the recent game against Sevilla, Mount wasn’t at his best. Perhaps the youngster needs some rest.
Against Sevilla he had a very poor game, he only managed 36 touches and one yellow card. He hardly managed to come in the final third position. Also when he came in final third positions he was not effective.
He lacked his usual energy and could not create many chances in the game. He was substituted for Hakim Ziyech in 62 minutes. It is very much clear from Mount’s Sevilla game that he needs some rest.
The Englishman has played every game in the Premier League except Chelsea’s 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace. He also played in both the Carabao Cup games and missed the crucial penalty against Tottenham. On national duty, he played all three games for England as well.
Lampard seems to be determined to get the best out of him. He has played him in a lot of positions such as No.10, No.8, and No.6. Due to his excellent off the ball running and work rate, Lampard plays him in so many positions. Thus due to this, he has hardly been given any rest.
Mason Mount’s inclusion in the starting line up is often justified due to his work rate. There is absolutely no doubt that Mount’s work rate for Chelsea is second only to N’Golo Kante. Since his work rate is so high thus it would make sense to play him in the center of the pitch.
There Chelsea already has Jorginho and Kovacic in that position. Both of them are better on the ball than Mount. Lampard would play him as a winger. Against Sevilla, Mount started on the left-wing, this meant that Pulisic was shifted on to the right.
Many Chelsea fans were very upset with Lampard’s decision. Mount had already played so many games the likes of Abraham or Callum Hudson Odoi could have started the Sevilla game. By constantly playing Mount, Lampard is draining him and it bad for the team.
There are other players who don’t get the playing they deserve because of Lampard’s favoritism. Thus, in the long run, it is not good for Chelsea nor for Mount and most of the squad as well.
