The Chelsea FC manager and the club legend Frank Lampard explains why his new signing, the American Christian Pulisic is not playing.
Frank Lampard was asked after the game whether or not Pulisic was a sufferer of Chelsea languishing three injuries. After referring to players during their loss to Liverpool, Lampard cleared that was not the situation at all.
“He wasn’t a victim of the injuries. I’ve got a squad to pick from. Before that, he had played a few games. Willian has come back in and been sharp and looked good. I decided to go with Mason [Mount] today, because we needed to stay strong in midfield and play Mason high up the pitch. That is my choice to make. He will get ample opportunities. He is a young player, as well as everyone, is talking about Mason and Tammy and Fikayo. He is actually as young, if not younger, than some of them. His chances will come.” continued the Chelsea FC boss.
There have been some recommendations in the British media this week. All those pointing at Pulisic being characterized as shy and has strived to fit in and settle down. This has been since his transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea in the summer. When asked if Pulisic was fighting with his new club in London, Lampard said he does not think that was the case and repeatedly steered to other players. Aside from Pulisic who also merit more minutes too.
“No, I can’t speak exactly for him, but no, that is not the case,” Lampard said. “I have to make choices. There is him sitting on the bench, Pedro sitting on the bench, Ross Barkley on the bench, Batshuayi, who deserves more minutes for the way he’s training at the minute. Those are the unfortunate choices I need to make.”
Players returning from injuries.
As of now, Pulisic is experiencing from Chelsea switching formations and the similarities of Willian and Pedro retreating to shape. Furthermore, Callum Hudson-Odoi is also set to return from injury. That might make Pulisic slip to holding Chelsea’s fifth-choice winger. Both Pedro and Willian received plenty of critique for their appearances in the midweek disappointment to Valencia in the UEFA Champions League. The truth Lampard did not just say Pulisic would have played for a few minutes but was unfortunate due to our injuries was quite revealing.
It is considered early to say this is a problem for the U.S. men’s national team. Although, Pulisic’s choice to join Chelsea in January might be looked upon as a step back if he does not soon grasp regular playing time. He commenced in the Super Cup final versus Liverpool and got an assist. He also started in Premier League games against Leicester, Norwich and Sheffield United. Although, his displays were a little apprehensive as he too often took the easy alternative. Lampard certainly ranks him and showed to Pulisic only turning 21 years old earlier this week. It is clear he does not rate him enough to start the native of Pennsylvania over the likes of Mount, Willian, and Pedro.
