The Reds star defender is set to make a comeback and has joined the squad to Southampton.

Liverpool gets a major boost up as Klopp is all set to recall his star defender for the upcoming Premier League battle.

The Reds face another hurdle on the south coast in their bid to win their first ever Premier League title. Manchester City’s comfortable 2-0 win over Cardiff city in midweek saw them regain top spot, but Liverpool can go back to the summit tonight should they win at St Mary’s.

Centre-back Joe Gomez is expected to make his return to the match day squad according to news and Jurgen Klopp is set to handle a major title boost with his return. The 21-year-old has been sidelined since the start of December when he fractured his lower left leg during Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Burnley.

Joe Gomez fell as victim to a thunderous but fair challenge from Burnley defender Ben Mee before crashing into the advertising boards. He also suffered a setback during his recovery when the injury did not appear to heel after initial surgery.

Liverpool have had to be patient but after a second operation, Gomez is on his way back to regain the full fitness and has been taking part in full first-team training at Melwood. Although the contest comes soon for him to return alongside Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence, he is likely to take up a spot on the bench.

Jurgen Klopp will also be delighted to have the Dutchman fit and ready to face his former club. There were fears he picked up an ankle problem in the final stages of Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 win over Tottenham, but he has brushed those aside.

His manager hailed his part in the victory, particularly his handling of a two versus one situation with Spurs attackers Heung-min Son and Moussa Sissoko.

Klopp said,

He did it alone, for what felt like 50 seconds, and he decided 100 per cent right but they still could have scored in that situation. Usually defending is teamwork and that helps him and he helps us a lot.

He has improved us and I think he has improved since he has been here. He is a different player from his time at Southampton. He was good there but with all the different games he has played now in the Champions League, that all helps you as a player. That’s what you expect when a player comes in, that he makes the whole team better. He is obviously a very good player and he makes players better around him.

He is so important to us, not only as a player but as a person as well. I couldn’t say a bad word about him even if I wanted. For a centre-half, he is still young so hopefully there is more to come and he can stay healthy and everything will be fine.”

Author’s take:

The promising young defender joined Liverpool on a very modest fee. Despite of the several injuries he had established himself as a first choice centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk. He clearly has all the basic attributes to become world’s solid defender. Had he not injured his knee he could have become Liverpool’s first choice.
