Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly identified Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic as the missing link in his midfield and will look to land him in the summer.
The Croatian has been struggling to find himself in the core of the Barcelona eleven after the arrival of Brazilian duo Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho in the winter and summer transfer window respectively. And Manchester United are linked with a move to land Rakitic from the Camp Nou to Old Trafford this summer.
Since arriving from Sevilla to Barcelona in 2014, Rakitic has been instrumental for the Catalan’s in winning the treble in his first season but has been outplayed by others in the time recently. Therefore Jose Mourinho is looking to snatch up the 29-year-old in United’s midfield to add quality in the central areas of the pitch.
Should Rakitic Move to Old Trafford?
For now, Rakitic is still considered as one of Barcelona’s main players in the midfield department, but as La Blaugrana are preparing to sign Atletico Madrid’s talisman Antoine Griezmann in the summer, Rakitic could fall out of favor in the Catalonian side’s squad.
However, United are in dire need of a box to box midfielder who can keep the Red Devils ticking in midfield. The English giants need to compete for the Premier League next season and are eager to bring in new signings, but Mourinho believes that Rakitic is the ‘missing link’ for United who can add balance to the team.
Rakitic is a world-class passer of the ball and has scored important goals for Barcelona. He is a big match player and is versatile in midfield as well as on the flanks. Along with Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata, and Matic, the Croatian’s addition to the squad could be a mouth-watering prospect if Mourinho plays his cards right.
I doubt Rakitic is the only player that United need, but none the less, he is a great midfielder and can only improve the midfield for Mourinho. He has the experience of playing at the top level and Mourinho has the powers to fit in Rakitic as a regular player with his traits. Although, I believe United will face competition for Rakitic as other clubs across Europe will look to poach the deal.
